Webstreaming Video Shows Off Westchester
The Westchester County Office of Economic Development is launching a new marketing effort to get out the message about Westchester. An eight-minute video touting the county as a business location is now available on the Web, as well as to firms, real estate brokers, business groups, and other organizations. The video shows the advantages of doing business here, gives extensive footage of Westchester, and includes interviews with local companies. Nokia, Dannon & Lillian Vernon Keep Westchester ‘Hot’
Westchester continues to demonstrate its attractiveness as a prime business location with the completion of three major deals this spring. Nokia, the Finnish cell phone manufacturer, has announced plans to purchase a building in Harrison, investing $29 million in renovations and importing up to 300 jobs. Lillian Vernon, the world famous mail order retailer, will move its 130 jobs to downtown White Plains. Dannon Company, the popular yogurt maker, will be moving its 208 employees within Greenburgh from Tarrytown.

Westchester and New York City Economies Gain Strength
Signs of a strengthening regional economy continue to surface from New York City up to Westchester County. Westchester's May unemployment is 3.9% -- down from 4.6% in March. Westchester's office vacancy rate is 12.54% -- a 4-year low. New York City can point to many positive economic trends. Unemployment is at 6% down from 8% in February. Tourism in 2003 was 36.5 million people - the highest level since 1999. Wall Street profits are the highest since 2000 with many indications of job expansion. The city government has a projected surplus of $1.3 billion. At a recent Yonkers Business Week Luncheon, Marc Goloven, senior economist for JP Morgan Chase pointed out that job growth in New York State has totaled 40,000 jobs since 2003. Business investment remains strong and the GDP continues to rise. According to Goloven, "New York State is going to be a sprinter." The recent efforts that successfully recruited Nokia to Westchester started with the “Westchester Advantage” brochure. This detailed brochure, with the sub-title “We’ve Got the Muscle To Help You Grow,” is published by the Westchester Office of Economic Development and is presented to businesses interested in Westchester. The brochure contains 14 fact sheets and a pamphlet on Westchester’s business incentives. SCORE – The Service Corps of Retired Executives -- offers free and confidential counseling to existing and start up businesses.
